What if peace is a verb?

Buckminster Fuller once stated, "God, to me, it seems is a verb, not a noun, proper or improper." As we embark on the United Nation's International Peace Week, I began to wonder... What if peace is more than something to be or have? What if peace is something we do? What if this week, each of us renews our commitment to take peace-filled action, to courageously use our gifts and talents, and to be a blessing to the world?  "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be ...

What if we share our joy?

This week, over two-thirds of the planet joined together to share in the joy of a royal family. Two-thirds of the planet was swept away in romance and celebration, hearts aflutter as global spectators of a wedded kiss from a balcony. Before the week's end, news breaks that the greatest threat to peace on our planet has been eliminated. And once again, the world unites in response. What if there is more power ...

The idea was born in a bubble bath. Donna Collins, now the Executive Director of The Global Peace Project, contemplated an idea for a peace enhancement study that could transform the city of Dallas, whose crime rate ranked number one for cities of more than a million people for ten consecutive years. In my Voices of Peace interview with Donna, she says, “We were not interested in a crime study. We were interested in a ‘peace enhancement’ study that just happened to have the side effect of reducing crime. We wanted our concentration to be on how ...

Donna Collins, Executive Director of The Global Peace Project, talked with me this weekend about progress on plans for our International Day of Peace citywide celebration on September 21. She gathered with other peace-focused organizations in the city to collaborate on the project. Interestingly, even at a meeting of peace-builders, a division clearly manifested around the board table. The facilitator of the event referred to the issue at hand simply. "We've got the butterflies on this side," he said, "and the barbed wire on the other." We ...

Reach for the Future!

It's been a whirlwind week... I returned from California with barely enough time to prepare for my next round of travels. First on the agenda was an annual tradition for me: Guest speaker for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards just south of Dallas, Texas. It was Day 4 of their conference, and the participants had all been up past midnight... many of them hanging out and talking until 2 am. I arrive bright-eyed on Wednesday morning, ready to talk to them about community and being of service. I could feel the imminent yawns as I arrived. But that didn't ...

Thursday night, I had the honor of attending the inaugural gathering of The Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment (GATE) at the FOX studios in Los Angeles. I flew in from San Francisco specifically for the event. As I arrived at LAX, standing in the taxi queue, I secretly fantasized that I would bump into an enlightened celebrity also on their way to the event. I fantasized that I would say hello, ask them if they were going to GATE, too, and they would offer me a ride to the venue. It didn't happen. Instead, the cabbie came. He skirted LA ...

Peace Worldwide Starts From Inside…

I had one of those weekends. It’s taken me two full days to recover. I’m still spinning from all the excitement. This weekend, The What If Up Club offered it’s second Dallas group leader certification as part of the Peace Project Foundation’s Season for Peace and Nonviolence. We maxed out the room on Friday (even had to send some groups out into the hallway to What if Up!), then had a solid turnout for Saturday’s training. One of the participants said it best: “This is contagious!” And the What If Up flurry is just beginning. Mark your calendar ...
